Set in José Ignacio, Uruguay, this timber-clad home is one of MAPA’s more recent projects. Simply titled Retreat in José, it’s set on a stretch of land between the beach and the countryside. The project is typical of MAPA, who first rose to fame for their prefab home, MINIMOD.
This house however, has a greater sense of permanence about it. It’s not as small as the MINIMOD, nor does it look like it can be packed up and bundled off to a new location with ease.

The retreat was completed in 2015, and was created for a client who wanted the best of both worlds: a countryside escape that’s not too far away from the city. According to MAPA, it’s a year-round retreat and caters for “summer enjoyment to the winter gatherings”.
In landscapes of high natural value, it is fundamental to respect their original condition and so it is essential a reversibility condition. Prefabrication allows us to work with industrialized materials that enable high-precision processes. Thus amortizing the impact of construction on the ground, minimizing waste, staff in situ and displacement: a perfect combination of nature and industry. – MAPA
The house is clad in ship-lap siding with a central portion being taken up with a series of patio doors and windows. On the inside, the main living area is flanked on both sides by these windows and doors, drawing in lots of natural light, and allowing the room to visually spread beyond the confines of its four walls.
The living area contains the kitchen, along with a breakfast bar, dining area and living room. It’s a compact but well designed room with plenty of circulation space to prevent it from feeling cramped. The bedrooms and bathrooms can be found at either end of the home.
The left-hand-side of the plan is taken up by what’s presumably the children’s bedroom. It features a series of bunks to squeeze in more people and comes with its own en-suite. The opposite end of the retreat is occupied by the master bedroom, with a slightly larger en-suite.
